We bought the site with a single storey pre-fabricated property which was built in 1929. Due to the property being beyond viable financial repair it was considered that the most suitable approach would be the replacement rather than the renovation of the building. Furthermore, the large plot size of over half an acre allowed for an additional dwelling to be easily accommodated.
While the planners wanted two properties to be side by side, we felt the tandem layout was more appropriate to enable both properties to enjoy the solar gain potential. Located in a stunning elevated position on the northern fringes of Sturminster Newton, both properties enjoy impressive views of farmland and the River Stour to the rear.
These eco-contemporary homes overlook the River Stour and unspoiled North Dorset Countryside and at the same time enjoys easy access to the local amenities of Sturminster Newton.
The property was built to meet the most demanding energy-efficient standards, providing an adaptable living space that maximizes access to natural light from the south and west, meaning it is economic to run. The internal configuration can be altered to suit your personal needs.
The setting offers an ideal combination of privacy and proximity to shopping and leisure facilities, as well as being in the heart of a vibrant community. This home is ideal for those downsizing or to those looking for a more manageable and user-friendly living space with modern contemporary aesthetics. There is also plenty of countryside available beyond the garden to walk the dogs.
This new build Dorset property is located in a stunning elevated position on the northern fringes of Sturminster Newton, a thriving rural town in the heart of Dorset, in an area that is predominately residential and having extensive countryside views to the west across the Blackmore Vale and the River Stour Valley.
Sturminster Newton is a historic town with a whole variety of trades represented in the centre, whilst the larger towns of both Shaftesbury and Gillingham are approximately 5 miles away. The town of Gillingham has the benefit of a mainline rail connection for London Waterloo as well as an access point to the A303 that is approximately 4 miles to the north.
Popular with tourists, Sturminster Newton has a large medical centre, dentist, community hall/centre with 300 seat theatre that is only a ½ mile flat walk away.
North Dorset 17 miles Trailway: this splendid walking, cycling and horse riding route runs alongside the River Stour on the dismantled railway line from Sturminster to Spetisbury, in Dorset, passing through pretty villages and towns such as Stourpaine and Blandford
Design & Build
Both the plots have been designed to be individual, stand-alone buildings however they do follow the same design themes and use of materials. These include a mixture of render and cedar cladding. A key consideration was how best to create contemporary buildings which are sensitive to the appearance of the surrounding area.
As such, changes to the design of the buildings have included reducing the scale and appearance of the dwellings by utilising the existing slope of the site and building into the ground. This was from both a design aspect, but also to be sensitive to the adjoining neighbours and to better blend and soften the appearance of the buildings into the landscape.
Plot 1 has a footprint of 165 sqm and Plot 2 a footprint of 158sqm, with separate garages. Both properties have balconies overlooking the beautiful views. Plot 1 has a roof terrace from the master bedroom but any overlooking between this property and the neighbour is prevented by a wall and privacy screen. The designs of both plots are such to benefit from solar gain in the winter months and solar shading during the summer. The internal layouts of both properties were decided by the buyers.
