We bought the site with a single storey pre-fabricated property which was built in 1929. Due to the property being beyond viable financial repair it was considered that the most suitable approach would be the replacement rather than the renovation of the building. Furthermore, the large plot size of over half an acre allowed for an additional dwelling to be easily accommodated.

While the planners wanted two properties to be side by side, we felt the tandem layout was more appropriate to enable both properties to enjoy the solar gain potential. Located in a stunning elevated position on the northern fringes of Sturminster Newton, both properties enjoy impressive views of farmland and the River Stour to the rear.

Design & Build

Both the plots have been designed to be individual, stand-alone buildings however they do follow the same design themes and use of materials. These include a mixture of render and cedar cladding. A key consideration was how best to create contemporary buildings which are sensitive to the appearance of the surrounding area.

As such, changes to the design of the buildings have included reducing the scale and appearance of the dwellings by utilising the existing slope of the site and building into the ground. This was from both a design aspect, but also to be sensitive to the adjoining neighbours and to better blend and soften the appearance of the buildings into the landscape.

Plot 1 has a footprint of 165 sqm and Plot 2 a footprint of 158sqm, with separate garages. Both properties have balconies overlooking the beautiful views. Plot 1 has a roof terrace from the master bedroom but any overlooking between this property and the neighbour is prevented by a wall and privacy screen. The designs of both plots are such to benefit from solar gain in the winter months and solar shading during the summer. The internal layouts of both properties were decided by the buyers.
